THE people of East Lancashire are being asked what they want from their waterways as part of a nationwide programme of consultation.
A forum with a specially-invited audience will be held at the Oaks Hotel, Reedley, tomorrow for the many different organisations which use canals, or who have an interest in them, to register their views.
The exercise is being carried out by British Waterways, which cares for over 2,000 miles of the nation's waterways.
The revitalisation of the waterway system is reflected in the fact that over 10 million people visit canals each year and that half of the population now lives within five miles of a canal.
The initial meetings will be followed up with events and activities throughout the summer.
Regional director of British Waterways Derek Cochrane said: "We have now entered the second great canal age and its success depends on meeting the needs and aspirations of users and local communities.
"Once again waterways are providing a vital component in stimulating economic prosperity, creating employment, attracting investment and improving the environment.''
