THE war in Yugoslavia, which Nato said was not a war, was a violation of the United Nations Charter to which Nato countries had put their signature and also the North Atlantic Treaty itself. These facts cannot be denied.

B. Todd's accusation (Your Letters, July 9) that I and correspondent P. Kaiserman "overlook or ignore the faults of others" is absolutely ridiculous. I have worked for world peace since 1945 and protested against the horror of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, the wars in Malaya, Korea and Vietnam, the occupation of Palestine by Israel, and the thousands of murders committed by Indonesia in East Timor, just to mention a few.

His comments regarding Northern Ireland show the same lack of understanding of the history of Ireland as that of the Balkan states. On the subject of the Balkans, I would recommend that he reads two booklets by John Boyd and Leo Dreapir, "The UN Common and Security Policy, National Independence or Global War" and "Today Yugoslavia, Tomorrow Russia," both of which I will gladly send him.
