THE report (Bury Times, July 9) headed: "Save our School" needs further qualification in relation to the support offered to Whitefield CP School and, indeed, other schools within the authority.
Given the absence of a senior staff member - as is the case at Whitefield CP School - it is a matter of routine for the local education authority to provide additional support.
The authority has a specialised provision for Special Educational Needs co-ordinators. This is a difficult role in any school, especially where the catchment area leads to a heavier burden than normal. Beyond that, it is also crucial to recognise the high level of pupil mobility which has an impact upon school numbers.
It is very important for the LEA to offer support to schools like Whitefield CP in order to assist with key issues for improvement, and we would want to place on record our appreciation of the commitment of the staff and governors to Special Educational Needs.
The "Key Stage" indicator results for this year show a significant improvement for Whitefield CP. Their science results are massively improved - by some 50 points - and mathematics results are also slightly better than last year.
The improvement at Key Stage One bodes well for the future. Given these factors, there is much to celebrate at Whitefield CP School.
