BRITISH Gas is warning holidaymakers travelling abroad to be on the lookout for the silent killer.
It follows tragic cases of carbon monoxide poisoning and deaths abroad caused by inadequate servicing and poor ventilation of water heaters and cookers.
The company advises people to lookout for telltale signs on these appliances that could spell carbon monoxide danger.
spillage stains, soot and discolouring around water heaters and cookers
flames that burn yellow or orange and unusual smells are obvious signs that appliances may have been neglected or haven't been checked properly
Ged Young, British Gas Services area manager, said: " If people start feeling unwell or are at all concerned they should stop using the appliance, inform staff at the hotel or apartment and get the appliance checked out immediately.
"Many Britons have carbon monoxide detectors in their homes which can be taken abroad for added protection or they can be bought before they go."
A special information line for people wanting more details on protection from carbon monoxide is open on 0645 605040.
