LEIGH'S largest law firm has backed The Journal's "Keep our Court" Campaign.
Chris Stephenson, managing partner of Stephensons Solicitors, has spoken in support of keeping Leigh County Court open.
Mr Stephenson, who founded the firm 22 years ago, expressed concern that many local people will face real difficulties if forced to attend court outside the town.
He said: "Leigh County Court provides a valuable service to the local community.
"The extra time and general inconvenience to attend at Wigan or elsewhere is immeasurable when you consider the wide variety of cases currently dealt with at Leigh.
"These range from small claims to complex family problems.
"Not everyone has a car and for those relying on public transport or needing extended day care for their children, this would be an added burden to what may already be a stressful situation.
"Although our firm has four other offices and employs 260 people across the north west, our roots are firmly planted in Leigh, which is the site of our largest and head office.
"Therefore, we fully support the campaign to retain Leigh County Court."
