LANCASTER Castle has an extensive history to speak of, as shown by the numerous guided tours that take place there.

For the first time locals are being offered a different view of the Castle that ventures beyond its current use as prison and Crown Court - the outside!

The public are invited to join in a walk around the grounds where they will see and hear about parts of the historic building which are not featured on the interior tours.

Included in the guide will be the Witches Tower, where the Lancashire Witches were held in 1612; the John O'Gaunt gateway and the notorious Hanging Corner which was the scene of many a grisly public execution up until 1865.

The tours start from the reception area. They are free of charge and take place on Monday and again on August 2 and 16 at 7pm.
