TWO Bury companies can take a bow after their efforts to bring more than 1,000 new jobs to the area proved successful.
Several weeks ago, BT Cellnet announced they had identified a site in Dumers Lane for a call centre which would create the jobs windfall.
Ron Wood Developments Ltd, the Bury-based development company, owned and run by former Birthdays Group chairman Ron Wood, are the people directly responsible for bringing BT Cellnet to Bury.
And they did it with a little help from another local business, Paul Nolan and Company.
The unit in Dumers Lane was being developed on a spectulative basis by Ron Wood Developments Ltd.
Their confidence and commitment to the area, plus the quality of the building, were the hallmarks of the successful luring of the telephone company. BT Cellnet had earlier carried out a full search of the area for suitable premises. And the building in Dumers Lane proved to be the only one of sufficient quality, size and flexibility to suit their needs.
Paul Nolan and Company introduced BT Cellnet to Ron Wood Developments and worked with their joint agent, CH Hillier Parker, in order to conclude the transaction.
Mr Nolan said: "This is the largest industrial letting in Manchester for a number of years and shows that quality accommodation is still in short supply, north of the M62."
Ron Wood Developments also have industrial land at Irlam, which they are proposing to develop.
They are also speculatively developing the Castle Brook Business Park at Pilsworth, which is likely to bring more jobs and prosperity to the area.
BT Cellnet's call centre should be fully up and running by around October.
The company has also been greatly assisted by Bury Council and officials from Bolton and Bury Chamber's Business Link.
