YOUNG Sam Dunderdale took pride of place for the Pioneer '79 club at the Holywell Sprint Meet in Wales.

Sam's main success came in the 50m butterfly girls 11-12 years age-group when she took the coveted gold medal position, but she also gained a silver medal after finishing second in the 50m freestyle.

There was also a creditable fourth place in the 50m breaststroke for Sam who was pipped by Michelle Taylor who took the third-place spot.

Also reaching a final place was Rachel C Clark in the 50m breaststroke. She came third and in the 50m backstroke, and also finished fifth in the 10 years age-group. David Fairbrother in the 50m breaststroke only just missed gaining gold with an excellent race against Llandudno swimmer Michael Jones. They raced head to head with David placed in silver medal position. In the same final Ben Nichols had an excellent swim to be placed sixth in the final. Ben also made the backstroke final achieving a personal best time to be placed fourth.

Robert West came third in the 50m freestyle and fourth in the 50m butterfly 11-12 age-group. In the 10 years Andrew Leeson was fifth in the butterfly final.

Young swimmers who took part in their first Open Meet gala and recorded excellent personal best times, included: Tom Walsh, Emily Fairbrother, Michael Shackleton and Melanie Stones.

Making up the group for the girls were: Eve Taylor. Jill Hebden, Abigail Catlow, Sarah Shackleton, Gemma Holden, Stephanie Abbott, Claire Phillipson, Adele Forster.

The boys team included: Jack Walsh, David Stones, Oliver Brindle and Michael Olstowski.
