BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent is refusing to get carried away by last night's friendly victory over Premiership giants Everton.
Ternent watched his side beat Walter Smith's expensively assembled squad 1-0 in front of a crowd of 7,547 thanks to a first half strike from new signing Alan Lee.
But the Clarets chief played down the result today and insisted the game was purely an exercise in fitness.
All 18 members of last night's squad, barring reserve keeper Craig Mawson, got a taste of the action as Ternent blooded his four new summer signings.
And the home fans quickly warmed to the likes of Lee and Mitchell Thomas as Burnley continued to make an impressive start to their pre-season programme.
Thomas was a commanding figure at the heart of the defence alongside his old Luton Town team-mate Steve Davis.
And Lee bagged his second goal in as many games against Premiership opposition to announce his arrival in East Lancashire.
Irish trialist Stephen Grant was also introduced to the action in the last 20 minutes and could have capped his debut with a goal but his shot struck the crossbar. "That was a good work-out for us - but purely from a fitness point of view and nothing else," said Ternent.
"We passed the ball quite well and it was good to get the legs going quite nicely.
"All the players had a part of the game and only Steve Davis and Mitchell Thomas stayed on for the full 90 minutes.
"But that's only because Chris Brass wasn't fit.
"I'm not getting carried away, though.
"Pre-season matches can be very misleading.
"So we'll be back in today when we'll start working hard again in preparation for Sunday's game against Sunderland.
"I'm pleased we kept a clean sheet.
"And it was nice of Everton to come over and play us.
"We are very grateful for that."
Everton boss Walter Smith also took the opportunity to blood some of his younger players. But he still gave the majority of his first team squad a run-out at some point or other and there were even suprise appearances by Kevin Campbell and Francis Jeffers.
Campbell got his first taste of the action since completing his move from Turkey and he was impressed by the way Burnley played. "Burnley gave us a good, hard game but it's all about fitness at this stage of the season," said Campbell.
"You can't really tell things by pre-season games, though, and obviously playing in the Premier League is different to playing Burnley."
Meanwhile, Chris Brass could miss the start of the season after picking up a stomach muscle injury last week.
Brass has seen a specialist this week and Ternent is now awaiting a report but the Clarets chief is already resigned to the possibility of losing the defender for up to a month.
Chris Scott also looks like being out for a similar period after damaging ankle ligaments in Tuesday night's reserve team friendly at Morecambe.
