TEENAGE golfer Ian Berry has done it again!
Seven days after becoming Grange Park champion in the 36-hole scratch medal final, the talented 17-year-old took Saturday's Captain's Prize with a final round nett 70 for a 136 total to win by one shot.
The club's premier prize of the season is played for over three rounds with the best score from either of the first two days combining with Saturday's score for a 36-hole total.
At the start of play no less than 84 of the field of 155 players had a 73 or better to build on.
Of these, 21 were in with a real chance on 69 or less.
David Molyneux, club captain in 1995, perhaps found the burden of being frontrunner with a 65 too great and was upstaged by 1990 captain Eddie Wilson who returned a 88 less 22 score of 66 for a 137 total which led for much of the day.
But again there was no stopping Berry. He had some scares along the way, notably a double bogey at the 15th but otherwise the five handicapper showed great recovery skills whenever in trouble to grind out victory with a solid 75 gross. It was enough to take first prize, presented later by this year's captain Geoff Makin, as well as the overall gross prize which he edged on a back 18 hole play-off from Ken Hudson (71 and 76).
