PEOPLE who owe council tax might be allowed to enjoy the Millennium free from town hall bloodhounds.
A combination of holidays and worries over beating the Year 2000 bug could give debtors a few weeks' grace.
Finance bosses have told councillors that their priorities between December 15 and January 15 are making sure that Bury residents receive their benefits on time and that council employees are paid.
If necessary, staff will be diverted from tax collecting.
Meanwhile, bosses are confident that their systems are Year 2000-compliant and are now making sure that the council's suppliers are equally ready for the date change.
