A PRIMARY school headteacher has blasted love-struck couples for leaving used condoms on her school field.

According to outraged parents at Our Lady and St Edwards Catholic Primary School, Lightfoot Lane, Fulwood, a youngster was rushed to hospital after picking up a used condom on the large playing field behind the school.

The school did not feel it necessary to inform the other children about the condom, and school chiefs have praised the way nursery staff dealt with the incident.

The school's acting headteacher Janet Hurley has appealed for people to steer clear of the school's playing field.

She said: "The whole thing sickens me. A six-year-old child became very frightened because of this.

"Fortunately it was not necessary to inform the whole school and the situation was handled delicately and with sensitivity by the member of nursery staff involved.

"This boy obviously didn't know what the condom was, so picked it up."

She added: "Staff have been extra-vigilant when on break duty, but we can't check the whole thing. We just don't have the manpower."

One parent said: "A school field should be used for children to play in. People should keep more intimate antics confined to their bedrooms.

"Luckily not all the children had to be told and their innocence is intact and perverted strangers should not take it away."

County Councillor Bill Chadwick, who represents the area, said: "Things like this do not help us when we try to promote schools for community use.

"The school is entitled to take all action necessary to make sure it doesn't happen again."
