BURY people are invited to nominate unsung heroes of the community for prestigious awards.
Nominations are still open for the second annual awards for voluntary service which will be handed out at Bury Town Hall on December 6.
The awards were the brainchild of Church ward councillor and former Mayor of Bury, Councillor Roy Walker, who wanted to recognise the many people in the borough who gave unstintingly of their time for good causes.
People can be nominated in one of six categories for the work they do: sport and recreation; cultural; work with children and young people; work with the elderly, handicapped and socially deprived; conserving and improving the environment; and support of registered charities.
Last year's ceremony was attended by more than 150 nominees and guests.
The overall winner for 1998 was Margaret Robinson, well-known as a tireless fund-raiser for Bury Hospice.
Other winners were Frank Philbin, Ian Hopkins, Margaret Broderick, Alf and Doreen Longworth, Ian Pringle and Mavis Rothwell.
For an application form, telephone the mayor's secretary, Leonard Molyneux, on 253 5117 or the chief executive's secretary, Sandra Holleran, on 253 5102. Closing date for entries is October 31.
