THE future of Accrington Victoria Hospital's maternity unit was in the hands of Virginia Bottomley.
Regional health chiefs backed the East Lancashire health authority's decision to axe the unit, saving £300,000.
But continued opposition from the Community Health Council meant the final decision had to be made by the Secretary of State.
