WORLD junior champion Nick Dougherty overcame his opening hurdle in the English Amateur Championship at St Mellion in Cornwall yesterday.
The Shaw Hill 17-year-old seeded player won his first round match five and four.
However, Accrington's Graham Mitton bowed out at the first stage when he lost four and three to an opponent from Beverley and East Riding.
The Pleasington pair of professional Ged Furey and amateur partner Ralph Scholey just missed out on a place in the grand final of the Lombard Trophy in San Lorenzo at the start of October.
Furey and 13-handicapper Scholey finished second in regional qualifying at Hesketh yesterday, one shot behind the winning pair.
Burnley's William Tye and Steve Chambers, a 14-handicapper, try their luck in the penultimate of 18 regional qualifiers at Pannal tomorrow.
