AN innocent nightclubber was attacked after a motor mechanic thought he was butting into a row with his girlfriend.

Burnley magistrates heard Steve Watson, 24, hit Christopher McLoughlin in the face "suddenly and without warning" - but suffered when he was "set upon" by bouncers.

Watson, of Mitella Street, Burnley, was fined £100 and ordered to pay £100 compensation and £40 costs, after admitting assault.

Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said Watson was restrained on the floor by door staff. He admitted to police he struck Mr McLoughlin for no reason whatsoever.

Mr McLoughlin went to Burnley General Hospital with a cut and swollen lip.

Peter Reynolds, for Watson, who had no previous convictions, said the victim was apparently an innocent passer-by.

Watson was drunk and got the impression Mr McLoughlin was interfering in an altercation with Watson's girlfriend.

After the club closed, Watson went over to have a word with his girlfriend. The pair had "temporary broken up", but the relationship was still ongoing. He thought Mr McLoughlin was interfering and hit him.

Mr Reynolds said Watson was then kicked repeatedly by door staff.
