THREE applications to build superstores in Burnley will be checked-out together at a meeting in October.
The move follows a request from the most recent of the three stores wars applicants, Tesco Stores Ltd, who want to build a store and petrol filling station on land at Centenary Way.
The other two applications relate to the former Prestige factory site.
The first, by Thornfield Properties plc, on behalf of Sainsbury, for a superstore, DIY store and a business and technology centre has already been approved, but a decision notice has not yet been issued.
The second application, for the same site, was submitted by Castlemore Securities Ltd. That application is for a superstore, restaurant and petrol filling station. The store operator is unknown.
The Tesco and Castlemore applications are still under consideration.
Tesco have asked that all three be considered together, arguing that each is a material consideration in determination of the others. They have asked that Tesco and Castlemore applications be considered together and at the same time the Sainsbury application be reconsidered.
A report to Thursday's meeting of Burnley's development control and highways sub-committee says: "It is true to say that there is only limited capacity for further food retailer in Burnley.''
Consultants have indicated there is capacity for one further large food store in Burnley.
Councillors will be asked to consider all three applications at a meeting on October 7.
At that time, a decision will need to be made as to whether there is capacity for only one new superstore and, if so, which is the better site, Prestige or Centenary Way.
