TWO sisters today told of the terrifying moment when a shopping trip with two toddlers turned into a nightmare as their car was rammed by a motorist as he escaped an attack.
Arlene Todd and Martine Cocker from Darwen were stopped at traffic lights on the junction of Bridge Street and Bow Street, Bolton, on Saturday afternoon when they noticed the driver of a BMW being set upon as he sat in his car.
Martine, 28, a police officer, said: "We could see a man kicking the BMW and hitting the driver and couldn't believe what was happening when the car set off and rammed us four times."
Arlene's twin sons, Alex and Lewis, aged 23-months, were strapped into their car seats during the incident.
"My first instinct was to chase the man responsible but I had to think of the twins.
"They went deathly white and were lucky not to be seriously hurt. All of us were badly shaken and Arlene suffered whiplash," explained Martine, who was driving her Toyota Carina.
"It's just not the sort of thing you expect to happen on a Saturday afternoon shopping trip with two toddlers."
Arlene, 32, a teacher at St Edward's Primary School, Darwen, added: "It was a crazy thing for somebody to do, especially as there were two babies in the back of the car.
"We've all been really upset by it."
Police are appealing for information about the incident which happened at 3.20pm. They are urging the BMW driver to come forward and have released the car registration number as H118 FBW.
Anybody who can help should ring 0161 872 5050 and ask for the Bolton traffic division.
