CHORLEY Harriers, involved in the Inter Club Grand Prix, fielded 20 runners in the Haigh Hall five-mile road race. Carl Holding was first under 18, Dave Lee third M50, John McDonald third M55, Jeanette Coleman third L40 and Keith Johnson was sixth overall.

Surprisingly, Blackburn Road Runners, who only have 60 members, also had 20 competitors in the race. Their stars included Brenda Fullard, third L45 in her first race in the age group, Norma Smith second L50, Freda Southworth second L55, Dougie Joss third M60 and Elizabeth Noblett third L50. Evan Cook of Blackburn Harriers in eleventh place was second M45, but beat M40 winner Alan Clarkson of Clayton who was 12th. Chorley AC's Janet Pound was second L40.

Clayton were team winners at the James Herriott half marathon with four athletes in the top ten.

In a tough race run in hot conditions Mark Brown and Alan Clarkson posted identical times of 1:17:43 for fourth and fifth places, Dave Gregory was eighth and Graham Cunliffe tenth.

Red Rose Road Runners are a Preston-based club, but had several East Lancashire based athletes in the race.

William Garner of Blackburn was 12th in 1:21:36, Stuart Pound (Burnley) recorded 1:30:55, husband and wife Val and Alan Sutcliffe returned 1:52:23 and 1:54:09 respectively and Padiham based Richard Packet was second M65 in 1:59:16. Their top performer however was Jennifer Adams of Clitheroe, winner of the L45 class in 1:39:42. Accrington RR fielded four athletes, and Blackburn RR six. Brian Scully was second M60 in 1:40:57 for Accrington, and his team mate Harry Haseley logged 1:46:04 in the M55 class. In the same age group, Blackburn's John Mitchell was five seconds behind Harry. Blackburn's Sandra Snape, ran 1:48:08.

Katie Trickett of Pendle and Chris White from Rossendale were the winning juniors in the Children of Chernobyl five-mile multi-terrain race at Littleborough.

Rossendale also won the M45 prize through Tony Spicer, and Derek Schofield was second M40. Darwen Dashers Jim Taylor (39:30) and Sheila Gudgeon (41:08) achieved PBs.

Clayton and Rossendale shared the honours at the eight-mile Turnslack Fell Race. Clayton had the first local finisher, Simon Thompson, fifth in 63:48 and won the M60 division through Doug Brown, and the L40s with Linda Bostock.

Jack Holt was second M50, with Roger Dearden third M60. Jean Rawlinson won the L45 honours for Rossendale, and husband Barry was third M50. Pete Jepson was second over 55, and there were thirds for Thornton Taylor (M40) and Derek Schofield (M45).
