CAMPAIGNING councillors are calling for a new warning system to be installed for residents of Riversway so they aren't left up the creek!
Locals living on the residential side of Riversway in Preston claim that whenever boats pass in and out of the docks, they lose one of their access routes - the one which runs over the dock gates - for up to 20 minutes at a time.
Often the road is shut with just a few second's notice, causing tailbacks and traffic chaos on the docks.
Councillor Marcus Johnstone has joined up with fellow councillors Elaine Abbot and Renee Black to help bring the residents' misery to an end.
They are pressing for signs to be erected on both sides of the dock gates informing locals of when it will be shut off to traffic. Coun Johnstone said: "It is a real pain for these residents.
"Just imagine what it must be like when you are on your way to work or taking the children to school and that gate suddenly opens and you are stuck.
"People can be left in a traffic jam for 15 to 20 minutes at a time which can become really frustrating.
"There are two access routes off the residential part but residents don't know one is shut off until a moment before it is actually closed."
"A sign saying when boat traffic is expected to pass through would be an easy way of warning people when not to travel down that access route.
"It would be such a simple thing and would cut out so much hassle for the residents."
Bosses at Preston's Docklands say they are investigating the proposals.
