A LANDMARK in the sporting history of St Helens is to be marked with a new event.
Sutton Harriers was founded in 1899 and over the years made a great name for itself.
The club was especially successful particularly in cross-country running, with the championship winning performances by individual club members and club teams.
To mark the centenary of the founding, St Helens Sutton AC, formed when Sutton Harriers amalgamated with St Helens AC, is holding a special open race in Sherdley Park.
It has been named 'The Centenary Five', and is for male and female athletes of at least 15 years of age, covers five miles over the park's paths .
It is to be held on the evening on Wednesday September 1 commencing at 7pm. Because of the limitations imposed by the course, the race is limited to 300 runners.
Further details and application forms can be obtained by sending a stamped addressed envelope to The Race Secretary, 1 Aspen Gardens, St Helens WA9 5UL.
