IF ever proof were needed that large parts of the Labour Party are against the motorist - with the possible exception of John (Two Jags) Prescott - then the remarks of C Reid (Letters, July 26) surely provide it.

What makes things worse is that, when he says that "yes, we are catering for the minority of idiots who have been educated enough to pass their driving test", he is insulting many thousands of motorists, especially those who rely on the car for their jobs, not to mention the emergency services.

If he had to call a doctor out in the middle of the night, would he prefer him or her to come by bicycle or pony and trap?

What would he suggest is suitable transport for all those on-call in the emergency services, needed at a 4am blaze or following a major disaster where hospital emergency plans have to be put into operation?

Were, heaven forbid, his own house to be ablaze, which would he sooner have a two-pump turn out (or bigger) or the sort of horse-drawn vehicle from the days of Will Hay?

It might be an idea for him to try canvassing, say, in Burnley Road, Accrington, because if he had the nerve to do so, he would soon find out views somewhat wider than his own.

GRANVILLE BROADHURST, Sharples Street, Accrington.
