MICHAEL Green of Blackburn Harriers ran his first-ever half marathon at Fleetwood on Sunday and finished a mile-and-a-half in front of his nearest rival, fellow Harrier Eric Wilson. Eric in second was the leading veteran in 1:18.52, but was over nine minutes behind Michael's 69.41.

The previous day Michael was involved in Blackburn's Northern Men's League match. He won the 1500m A race, then helped to pace Nick Samuels round the 5000m to give the team first and second and maximum points. Points were vital because in a tight division, Blackburn could have been promoted, but were not safe from relegation either. In the event, they will remain in Division Two after finishing third in the final fixture. Next week, 22-year-old Michael flies back to the USA to continue his education at Troy State University, Alabama where he has been studying Sport Management for the last two years. A 5000m specialist, his PB has improved to 14.12 this season, and his goal is to make the Commonwealth Games team in the 2002 games in Manchester.
