DAVE Lewis of Rossendale Harriers beat a top class field in the Barnoldswick Weets Hill Race, a six-miler which combines road and fell.
On an out and back course, the first 1.5 miles is on the road, then the runners climb the fell to the trig point before turning back. Matthew Whitfield of Bingley, pressed Lewis until the final road section, when the track international was able to utilise his greater speed.
Although Martin Lee was seventh and Gary Sumner 13th, Rossendale didn't take the team prize because Lee has not yet served the qualifying period for his new club. That left Clayton first with Ian Greenwood eighth, Anthony Waterworth ninth and John Wieczorek 12th. Waterworth also took the trophy for first local.
Vanessa Peacock (Clayton) and Jean Rawlinson (Rossen- dale) were once again the leading veterans as they finished second and third ladies behind 20-year-old Charlotte Sanderson of Bingley. Graham Cunliffe of Clayton was the winning M40, Ken Taylor of Rossendale took M50 honours with Clayton Harrier Ross Jaques heading the M60s. The oldest athlete in the race was Jack Riley of Clayton who won the M70 class. Thanks to generous sponsorship by Hope Technology, the prize list included a mountain bike offered as a spot prize. Lucky winner was Andrew Durkin of Barnoldswick. Like Dave Lewis, Anne Smith of Park High School is a reigning Lancashire Cross Country Champion. She won the under-14 two-mile road race in 12.48. Nikita Dixon and Jenny Allen were first and second under 12s. Jack Thompson was the boys under nine winner while Emma and Rebecca Thompson were the top under nine girls.
