I AGREE with Gordon Arkwright's comments (letters, July 22) about the current market and its site.
However, I do not agree that relocation to the bus station site is a good idea.
Firstly, the bus station is needed for buses and on the plans for the new bus station there isn't room for a market.
Also the previous experience when the market was located there temporarily showed that the site was unsuitable. I know this because some weeks ago the Estates committee invited market traders to air their views on how the situation of the current market could be improved.
The traders explicitly said that trade at the bus station site was much lower than previously and the only reason stallholders were able to survive was because the rent was free.
In consultation with market traders the estates committee has put forward a number of measures to improve trade and take-up of stalls at the current market.
I very much hope these will work.
