WHILE many cyclists have completed the Land's End to John O'Groats marathon on two wheels few, if any, have made the journey on a three wheeler!

But that is the challenge facing Preston Wheelers members Phil Stevenson and Dave Goodenough as they gear up for the September 6 ride.

Phil, 68, past president of Preston Wheelers and 61-year-old Dave, a former Veterans' Time Trial champion of the club, are set to make the journey on a 70-year-old single fixed wheel tandem tricycle.

The trike, which has a Chater Lea drive gear, incorporating a two-wheel drive differential back axle, was built in 1929 by Sun Cycles and was purchased by Phil for £1 from a member of Blackpool's Palatine Road Club in 1958.

The intrepid duo aim to raise loads of cash for The Back Up Trust, a national charity for the spinally injured, which has helped Phil's daughter Michelle, since she suffered spinal injuries in 1996.

Now the former Preston Wheelers schoolgirl champion rides an easy rider hand cycle and will accompany her dad and Dave along part of the end-to-end course.

But before the charity champs set off on their mighty mission they are keen to find a kind-hearted motorist to accompany them on their long journey.
