THE birthday celebrations of a 13-year-old schoolgirl turned to tears after thieves got into her family's back garden and stole her mountain bike.

After enjoying a bike ride with friends, Sarah McGregor, pictured, left her Raleigh Max bicycle in the back garden of her home, in Russell Avenue, Leyland, overnight on Friday, July 23.

But the next day the heartbroken youngster woke to discover her £180 bike, which had been given as a Christmas present two years ago, had been swiped.

After reporting the incident to police, Sarah's mum Angela was delighted when officers found the bike.

Now police are set to launch a major crackdown on all types of insecure property and are urging people to keep garages and sheds locked.

They say while people enjoy the glorious hot weather, residents should not to be tempted to leave garages, sheds and windows open - making easy access for the opportunist thief.

Officers are urging people to keep their house, garage and sheds locked, even when they are at home, and to ensure their garden gates remain shut and locked at all times.

Valuables should not be left in cars and vehicles should be locked and garaged if possible.

Mrs McGregor said: "She was devastated when she realised her bike had gone, especially as it was her birthday.

"We were very lucky to get it back."

South Ribble Crime Prevention officer PC Lesley Brown said: "If you have gates to the garden please lock them to prevent access to the rear, and often most valuable part, of your property.

"Never leave garage doors open with property on view. It only takes a matter of seconds for thieves to strike.

"So many crimes we deal with are preventable. With a little extra care and thought everyone can make a big difference."
