REGARDING your article 'Alert over gay nights at council sauna suite' (LET, July 28), I was wondering if the local constabulary are able to confirm my impression that this part of Lancashire has a very low crime rate. Surely, there must be no violence, no motor crime, no burglary, no mugging and no shoplifting!

Why do I ask this question? Well, if the police are able to commit their valuable time to patrolling a sauna, where the bosses are not aware of any incidents - and where, in the word of Councillor Jeff Cheetham, by his own admission a regular for five years: "I go there every Monday and Friday and I can assure you that if I had heard or seen anything untoward, I would have taken steps to stop it." - then the police are surely desperate to find something to do to fill the dull hours of their crime-free shifts.

On the off-chance that a crime were to be committed in Haslingden against an elderly person like myself, I am sure he will understand that in this day-and-age with limited police resources, the police are more valuably put to use in preventing the reoccurrence of a crime, which, according to the testimony of all those involved, has not yet taken place.
