WE used to sing 'Land of Hope and Glory, mother of the free', but now it seems more like land of prison and poverty.

Surely refugees should be treated with kindness and sympathy - and accepted as genuine unless proven to be imposters.

They should be housed in ordinary accommodation - not prisons - and be given food and help to adapt (such as English lessons) until such time as it safe for them to return to their native country.

Many will make valuable contributions if permitted to work.

The present harsh treatment is not in keeping with the principles of the United Nations.
