HOPES of a multi-million pound improvement grant have been put on ice.

On Monday night traders and local business people met in Tyldesley to discuss a £6 million upgrade grant bid.

Chamber of Trade chairman Mike Norris revealed: "We were hoping for Tyldesley to be included in Single Regeneration Budget No 6 but our chances are diminishing.

"Out of 300 target areas we are now in position 85 and we understand priority will be given to the top 50. We may have to wait a little longer."

But by next summer Tyldesley should have sprouted a network of spy cameras.

"A bid has gone into the Home Office from Wigan Investment Centre's resource procurement department," said Mr Norris.

Suggested sites are: Tyldesley Market Square, High Street/Elliott Street, Lime Street/Elliott Street, Castle Street/Shuttle Street, Shuttle Street/Somerfields, Cumberland Avenue, Lancaster Avenue, Crawford Avenue/Shakerley Lane, Hough Lane/Sale Lane, Mort Lane/Sale Lane, Stour Road/Ennerdale Road and Princes Avenue/Manchester Road (Blackmoor).

Frank's Cafe proprietor Mr Norris said a £60,000 grant would be topped-up by shopkeepers who could reap benefits from the CCTV through reduced insurance premiums.
