A GEM of a sculpture - but what shall we call it?
Award-winning Blackpool jeweller Michael Hyman is offering a reward for whoever comes up with the best name for the bronze work of art outside his shop.
The managing director of Leonard Dews jewellers in Market Street is offering a £200 Raymond Weil W1 watch for the lucky winner.
The company helped fund the seven-foot-high sculpture, by Welsh artist Glynn Williams, as part of Blackpool Challenge Partnership's £3m revamp of the town centre. It depicts acrobats reaching heavenwards in a tower of bodies and is one of only three that were cast - an identical one was bought by pop legend David Bowie.
Mr Hyman, who won the Fylde Coast Business Person of the Year award last year, said: "I have an open mind on suggestions for the name, but I feel it should recognise the resort's tradition for entertainment and the history of Leonard Dews as one of Blackpool's longest-established retail businesses."
Town Centre Forum chairman Tony Stone thanked Mr Hyman for his support: "This is another strong example of the public and private sectors working together for the benefit of the town.
"We are showing a great commitment to improving the environment of the town centre and this new sculpture is the showpiece of the improvements in Market Street."
Entries for the competition may be made either in person at Leonard Dews shop or by post to: Name the Sculpture Competition, Leonard Dews, 43-47 Market Street, Blackpool, FY1 1SU. Closing date is August 31.
