AN East Lancashire firm is doing its bit to help the environment.

Speciality Coatings in Dewhurst Street, Darwen, has achieved the ISO 14001 standard for its environmental management system.

The company, which coats paper for wallpaper manufacturing, is now hoping its good work will be recognised in the business category of the Lancashire Evening Telegraph's Grimewatch awards.

The firm has taken several different steps to improve its green credentials.

The site's liquid storage facilities have been improved to reduce the chance of pollution occurring.

Paper and cardboard used at the site, including office waste paper, is recycled, and all paper used in the manufacture of the company's products comes from well managed forests.

The company is aiming to cut the amount of waste it sends to landfill by 10 per cent by next year, and reduce energy consumption by five per cent.

Even the external appearance of the factory has been considered, with flower beds planted. Environmental officer Alison Duckworth said they hoped to improve efficiency and reduce costs - and demonstrate their commitment to good practice to customers and all those with an interest in the business.

All kinds of green projects are eligible for Grimewatch. There are categories for schools, businesses, local authorities, community groups and individuals, as well as for heritage and long-term projects.

For full details of how to enter, contact Grimewatch co-ordinator Ron Freethy on 01254 678678 ext 244, or send him a fax at 01254 680429, or an e-mail to vcowan@lancashire.newsquest.co.uk.
