CHARITY runner Stephen Ellis is all set for another bite of the Big Apple as he prepares to run in the biggest challenge of his life - the New York Marathon.

The 28-year-old from Darwen can't wait for his third trip to the city in November when he will be running for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Stephen, general manager of J H Nightingales garage, Great Harwood, is a former Blackburn Rovers Youth Team player and turned out with future soccer stars such as Jason Wilcox, David May and Lenny Johnrose.

After leaving the club, he turned to a career in professional Rugby League and played for Batley and Swinton.

Stephen picked up a knee injury during a five-months stint in Australia at Snowy River Bears - but now he's fighting fit, plays for Pleasington RLFC and is ready for the biggest challenge of his life.

"I've tried for four years to get a place in the London Marathon, but I've always been unlucky," said Stephen. Macmillan were sent my details and asked me if I wanted to run in New York in a group for them.

"I've been twice before and it's a fantastic place to be. I'll be staying for four days and the hotel is in Times Square. It's right next to the finishing line, so I'll be able to jump straight in the bath and relax when I've finished!" Although he has already raised more than £2,000, Stephen is looking for as much sponsorship as possible.

He added: "Ideally, I'd like to get another £200 so I can get my deposit back, which I'll donate and I'd love to make about £3,000 in total because it's such a good cause."

Anyone who would like to sponsor Stephen can call him at work on 01254 877796.
