OVER the last few years, I have been trying to bring about a change in the law to get the Department of Transport to make it compulsory for all newly-qualified drivers to undergo some form of motorway tuition.
I understand that the police have once again come in for criticism in the Press regarding their summer drink/drive clampdown on motorists. Although this is not what my campaign is about, I would like to repeat the comments I made at Christmas.
I said then that I wholeheartedly concur with the police's action on this issue. Because of all the controversy over what level of alcohol is safe, in my view, there can only really be one level that is totally safe and that level is zero.
Anybody who gets behind the wheel of a car after consuming alcohol should have to face the responsibilities of their own actions. I honestly believe that the penalties for those who commit this anti-social and criminal act should be a lot tougher.
I applaud the police for their action.
