I WRITE in response to the recent flurry of correspondence condemning the levels of policing and surveillance at the recent day of action against the social and environmental destruction of capital and in particular multinational corporations. As someone who helped to facilitate the events of June 18 in Lancaster, (in solidarity and co-ordination with similar actions in over 30 countries worldwide - something consistently ignored by both local and national press) I am in complete agreement with previous writers, that the behaviour of the police was ridiculous, a waste of resources and a crude attempt to intimidate the voice of dissent. Your newspaper has now published three separate letters calling on the police to explain their actions and engage in open debate with the community they are supposed to serve. These calls have been ignored. Maybe the police don't read the Citizen? I would now ask the Citizen to approach Lancaster Police on behalf of their readership, voicing concerns raised and requesting a response.
