PENWORTHAM man Andrew Philip Greenwood appeared before South Ribble Magistrates, in Leyland, on Monday, August 9, charged with the murder of Preston student Janet Murgatroyd.
Greenwood, 25, of The Maltings, Penwortham, is accused of murdering the part-time Lancashire Constabulary assistant on June 16, 1996.
Janet's battered body was found dumped in the River Ribble, at Penwortham, three years ago.
He wept uncontrollably during the ten-minute hearing and spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth, before slumping into a chair in the dock.
The magistrate allowed Greenwood to remain seated throughout the hearing.
He was remanded in custody to appear before magistrates on September 20 for committal to the Crown Court.
