ORGANISERS behind the Mela have reacted angrily to claims by a local band that they were ignored in favour of an international group.
Dilip Kumar, manager of Garam Masala, accused the committee of acting in its own interest by booking Melody Express instead of themselves.
But Anil Hindocha, chairman of the Mela's entertainments committee, accused Garam Masala, which played last year, of doubling their fee to £500 and refusing to play for less.
He said: "They then decided they wanted to be part of the Mela and - just three days before the event - they offered their services for free. But by then, it was fully-booked.
"It's upsetting to hear them say we acted in our own interests because all our meetings were open to the public."
Melody Express were paid £1,200 which Mr Hindocha said reflects their standing as an internationally renowned band.
