STROLLING through the well-trodden streets of Winckley Square, in Preston, is a regular pastime for many local people content to bask in its splendid gardens and fine buildings.
As Citizen readers will know, many people with fond memories of the square, have been featured in our Readers Recollections slot.
This week, it is the turn of amateur artist and photographer Frank Cunliffe, of Walton-le-Dale, who has two lovely pictures of the 18th century square.
As a former reprographics manager for Preston Borough Council, Frank was lucky to acquire the prints after being asked to reproduce the original pictures.
He said: "As a keen photographer myself I have always loved old pictures especially when they used the old box type cameras. "So when the former curator of the Harris museum gave me some pictures of the square to reproduce I asked him if I could have copies for myself.
"As a born and bred Prestonian I have always liked Winckley Square.
"It's a beautiful place just two minutes away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre and I used to walk to there many times from my family home in Adelphi Street.
"In one of the pictures there is a man in a long coat and bowler hat. I was told that this was the photographer himself who set the picture up before it was taken by his assistant.
"I don't know who the photographer is, but I know he took many pictures around Preston, including the covered market.
"But I was stuck by these pictures the first time I laid my eyes on them. They're great."
