REGARDING the proposals for the mosque in Stoneyholme, Burnley, a huge monolith totally out of keeping with its surroundings, according to your report (LET, July 31) it will take light off adjoining properties.
One can't help comparing this with the saga of the spire of St James' Church, Burnley, which people tried so hard to keep and have erected somewhere else.
Burnley people were overruled, but Asians, who have been here for a comparatively short time, look like being able to go ahead with their enormous structure.
If the whole thing is given the go-ahead, will we then be subject to enormous claims from residents of Stoneyholme who have no light in their homes; who could say that their homes are now devalued due to this construction?
Is it fair to bring children up in homes without adequate light; can they then have a home in the area which they select?
Come on, Burnley councillors and so-called planners, think of your town as a whole, with so many boarded-up properties, some belonging to those who have no objections to a mosque, and give this development the thumbs-down sign.
Send it back to the drawing board with a request for something more in scale with the surrounding area and properties, smaller, in height, in overall area and with enough car parking to comply with planning regulations.
MARY FLETCHER (Mrs), Higham Hall Road, Higham, Burnley.
