Clarets boss Stan Ternent insisted that no player has a divine right to a place in his side after naming crowd favourite Glen Little among the substitutes for Saturday's win over Chesterfield.

Ternent feels the winger has been below par so far this season and acted by keeping him on the bench until the final 25 minutes of the Clarets' 2-1 victory.

"We have got competition for places. No-one has a divine right to a place. If you are doing the business you'll be in the side, if not you won't," said Ternent.

Burnley were left hanging on after David Reeves pulled a goal back from the spot following an innocuous-looking incident involving Tom Cowan.

"It was a bit unfortunate. Paul Holland, who I know quite well, turned round and said I can't believe I've won that and I said 'neither can I,'" revealed the Clarets defender.

"He had hold of my shirt and I had hold of his and as the referee turned round he let go of mine and all the referee saw was me, not even pulling, but just holding.

"But you can't do it in the box and I will learn from that," said Cowan, who underlined Burnley's delight at bouncing back from their mid-week cup hammering.

"It hurts your pride and Saturday hopefully showed that we were hurt by that and now we're back on form hopefully," he added.
