THOSE who voted for the first time in the 1997 general election may not recall what Prime Minister Harold Wilson said so blithely on TV in 1967 after he devalued the pound - that the pound in your pocket is still a pound.
Some financial experts writing recently in the business press said the pound will only be world 60p on its transition to the single European currency. if so, it would be a second devaluation by a socialist government in my lifetime.
We are well aware Tony Blair has his eyes set on being the leader of a socialist Europe. I wonder if he will do a Wilson on TV and admit a devaluation is possible.
Not likely - he only likes to tell good news on TV.
