BRITISH Gas today warned people to be on their guard after a series of incidents involving bogus callers.

The reminder comes as energy advisors from the company prepare to visit homes throughout the town following the firm's expansion into the deregulated electricity market.

Area manager Julian Anderton said: "We have had various reports of people visiting homes claiming to be from British Gas, sometimes calling in the evening and asking people to sign forms.

"While most callers will be genuine British Gas employees, there may be bogus callers around.

"Basic security checks include attaching your door chain before answering, never handing over cash in advance or allowing callers to drive you to the bank. Remember that genuine callers will always be happy to wait while you check identification."

British Gas has trained all its advisors in doorstep security procedures, showing identification with a phone number so customers can verify their identity.

It is also offering special security services for elderly, disabled or chronically sick customers, allowing them to agree a private password which can then be quoted on the doorstep. For information about the scheme, call 0645 555 404 (local rate).
