YOUNG people in Preston are celebrating after their campaign to get better value school meals was a success.

Lancashire County Council had planned to give youngsters entitled to free school meals the equivalent of £1.30 day to spend on canteen food.

But they complained that all they would be able to buy for that amount was crisps, fizzy drinks and sweets - so they enlisted the help of a local county councillor Bill Chadwick.

County Coun Chadwick, who represents part of Preston, said: "They approached me and I helped them draft a petition which was sent to Lancashire County Council.

"They argued that they wouldn't be able to get a decent meal for £1.30 a day, and there is no point us promoting healthy eating if all we offer them is junk food."

The petition, which carried nearly 100 names from worried youngsters, was sent to Lancashire County Council, who have now agreed to modify the level of free meal to £1.60.

They have also agreed to ensure that all children who pay for meals are guaranteed a decent meal for the same amount.

County Coun Chadwick added: "This new amount will alleviate real hardship in several cases and, more importantly, ensure that all children get a full meal at school.

"These young people should be congratulated on their initiative in taking this campaign forward."

A Lancashire County Council education and cultural services spokesman said: "The situation has now been modified and new arrangements have been put in place for September.

"This will give children a standard meal option at a price of £1.60 in all secondary schools."
