ST HELENS Combination Premier Division outfit, Carr Mill FC, previously known as The Anchor FC, defeated their Warrington Premier Division Champions Whiston Cross in the first round of the North West Inter League Alliance Champions Cup.

Man of the match Robbie Stroud gave Carr Mill the lead after 20 minutes with a magnificent header from a Martin Hynes corner.

And five minutes later Darren Reid and the 'Cross' keeper both competeded for a high ball from Gary Ball with Reid just getting the initial touch for a 2-0 lead.

Whiston, however ,came back and reduced the arrears five minutes before the interval. The rest of the game produced many close calls, but both keepers excelled themselves and ran Robbie Stroud very close for match honours.

Carr Mill now go into the semi-finals where they are scheduled to entertain Preston Champions Whitbread FC and will be played on or before week end 28-30 August.

Omitted from the Combination's AGM notes was the eighth new club admitted to the Saturday League, Green Dragon (Sutton Manor) FC who will compete in Division Two.

The Saturday games will commence on Saturday September 4 and the Sunday Division will kick off the day after, Sunday September 5.
