A PROPOSED development of 12 detached houses on a former school site in Billinge has been turned down by St Helens Council's Planning Committee.
Members felt that the development would create traffic problems at the junction of Holt Avenue and Birchley Road. They also felt that a proposed acoustic fence would be out of keeping in an area where stone walls were more acceptable.
The land was occupied by St Mary's Junior and Infants School until 17 years ago, and then by a youth club until three years ago.
The committee heard that there had been seven letters of objection, and one of support, for the housing development plans. The parish council also objected.
