THE notorious hairpin bend at Mallory Park has dented Darren Barton's bid for the British 125cc Championship.

The likeable Hoddlesden racer looked set for another appearance on the podium when he slid off on his Helphire Bike Assist/Colin Appleyard Racing Honda.

"It was my error. I was going really well and feeling confident when my rear wheel lost traction on the hairpin and low-sided me," he said.

Barton was particularly disappointed with his mistake, having broken the lap record with a brilliant time of 50.6 seconds to take pole position.

But he reaffirmed his reputation as one of the most tenacious riders in the series when he managed to pick up his bike and rejoin the race.

Despite restarting down in 19th place, Barton rode with total commitment to pull back 10 laps and finish ninth.

The result leaves him still second in the championship, and well-placed to challenge leader Steve Patrickson with three rounds to go.
