MICKY Mellon helped Burnley chalk up their second win of the new campaign and then admitted that the Clarets couldn't have asked for a better start.
"If somebody had given us seven points out of nine at the start of the season we would have jumped at it.
"A lot of people have got to remember we are still getting to know each other and there are a lot of new players but it's looking very good," said the midfield playmaker after Burnley won 1-0 at Oldham to claim fourth place in the Second Division table.
However, Mellon confessed that Saturday's victory could have been more comfortable.
"We are obviously delighted that we won but we're a little bit disappointed that we didn't win by a couple more goals," he added.
"I think if we had got the second we would have maybe gone on to get three or four which we deserved I thought.
"When you're sitting on a 1-0 lead it gets a bit edgy, but we hung on and defended well. And winning games is what it's all about."
Mellon played a key role in one of Burnley's brightest attacking performances for some time. And the advanced midfield role given him by manager Stan Ternent is bringing the best out of the former Blackpool man.
"I enjoy getting in there," he said. "People seem to find me hard to pick up and I seem to get a lot of space in there.
"Obviously I want to do my best for the club. The most important thing is for the club to get up, but me playing well is a bonus."
And he believes the Clarets are now heading firmly in the right direction after a difficult first few months following his arrival at Turf Moor last season.
"We've got a squad of very good players. You've just got to look at the bench. And any team in this division that can keep Glen Little on the bench must have half a chance," insisted Mellon.
