TWO robbers armed with a handgun and shotgun stole thousands of pounds in a violent attack at Shawforth Post Office.
Postmaster John Bramall was working alone in the Market Street shop at 3pm yesterday when he was confronted by a masked man brandishing a revolver and demanding money.
He was backed up by another man with a shotgun. The first raider smashed the security screen and demanded money from Mr Bramall.
Mr Bramall, 51, was not hurt but was badly shaken. A police spokesman described the robbery as a violent attack in which it was fortunate no-one was hurt.
The offenders made off in a stolen red Vauxhall Nova, G321VNB.
Details of the vehicle were circulated and the car was found in the Rochdale area by Greater Manchester police.
One man was arrested and was taken to Rawtenstall police station where he was today being questioned by detectives. The search for a second man is continuing. No cash or weapons have been recovered.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the raid and about anyone seen with the vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to contact Rossendale CID on 01706 237441.
