AFTER reading letters on the subject of the Millennium Bridge in the 19 August issue, I suggest it should be named John O'Gaunt Bridge after the man who really put Lancaster on the map.

John, of course, was Lancaster's most famous tourism officer. After years of neglect by Lancaster City Council the castle was in a right state, but as soon as John had completed his masterly renovation, tourism in the area rocketed. Initially there may have been complaints that the admission price of a groat a head (children half price - never heard of pensioners) was a bit steep, but these were soon silenced when it was realized that some people were allowed to stay in the dungeons indefinitely, completely free of charge. Although basically a very politically correct and caring person, John sadly never seemed to find the time to indulge in his favourite hobby of riding around with the local cycling club doing good but, on the other hand, no one ever complained that he paid starvation wages - or if they did, it was only the once.
