I'M afraid the council is on the wrong track if it thinks improving the Ravenhead Greenway will encourage shoppers to walk or cycle into town.
The most direct route from Thatto Heath into the town centre is via Ravenhead Road, which links Crossley Road to Canal Street.
The problem is that Ravenhead Road is owned by Pilkingtons and is both a favourite rat-run and a place for fly-tipping. Against both activities the council is powerless and the company seems to take little or no interest to curb either.
Follow the signs from Thatto Heath along the Ravenhead Greenway and you take a roundabout way to Burtonhead Road (near the McDonalds) and no further - still a mile from the town centre. Going shopping - or particularly if you are returning with bags - you do not want the tourist route.
So come on council, spend £53,000 on a direct route to somewhere... instead of on a route to nowhere.
